New Maruti & Hyundai Micro SUVs To Challenge Tata Punch

Must Read

Launched in 2021, the Tata Punch was an instant hit. Attributes such as its compact footprint, modern styling, practicality and safety credentials have worked in its favour. The compact crossover is currently available in eight trims – Smart, Pure, Pure+, Pure+ S, Adventure, Adventure S, Accomplished and Accomplished+ S – priced between Rs 5.65 lakh – Rs 10.60 lakh (ex-showroom). While the Punch continues to dominate its segment, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are gearing to challenge its position with two new models.

Hyundai is working on an all-new sub-metre electric SUV, which has been spotted testing multiple times. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki is developing a new micro-SUV, which could be introduced as a replacement to the Ignis. Here’s a brief overview of these two upcoming compact crossovers.

Codenamed Maruti Y43, the upcoming micro-SUV is expected to be offered with multiple powertrain options – petrol mild hybrid, CNG and electric. It’s still too early to comment on its exact engine details. However, reports suggest that the Y43 could be offered either with a 1.2L, three-cylinder petrol mild hybrid or 1.0L, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, or both. There are also speculations that Maurti Suzuki might introduce its in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain in the micro SUV.

The upcoming Hyundai micro-SUV will be a Made-in-India product, featuring a boxy and upright stance. Spy images reveal that the model will feature horizontally placed LED taillamps, a charging port on the left front fender, a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, roof rails, flush-type door handles and a rear spoiler.

While the powertrain specifications and complete feature list are not available yet, the Hyundai micro EV SUV is expected to be offer a large instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, a 360-degree camera, multiple airbags, electronic stability control and more.
