Must Read

Launched in early 2024, the Tata Punch EV is among India’s top-selling electric vehicles, and has helped the company command a significant market share in the segment. This compact electric SUV is favoured for its premium and practical appeal, multiple battery choices, feature-loaded interior and strong safety credentials. Aiming to challenge its dominance, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are gearing up to launch two compact EVs – the Fronx EV and the Inster EV, respectively.

Official launch dates and details of the upcoming Tata Punch EV rivals are yet to be announced. However, the Maruti Fronx EV is expected to arrive in 2027, while the Hyundai Inster EV is slated to hit Indian roads in 2026. Here’s a quick look at the key details of these upcoming Punch EV rivals.

Maruti Suzuki is yet to launch its first electric car in India; however, it announced plans to introduce 6 EVs by 2030. The carmaker has already showcased silhouette teasers for its upcoming EVs, which are likely to include the e Vitara, WagonR EV, Fronx EV, Hustler EV, Swift EV and a premium compact EV.

If under development, the Maruti Fronx EV is expected to receive some EV-specific design changes to the front grille, DRL and alloy wheels. As of now, there is limited information available about the model. Media reports suggest that it could be offered multiple batter pack options, and offer a driving range between 350km – 400km.

Hyundai Inster EV

The Inster EV will be Hyundai’s entry-level electric offering in India, based on the E-GMP platform. Codenamed HE1i, the compact EV will be manufactured at the company’s Sriperumbudur facility, with locally sourced batteries from Exide. Globally, the Hyundai Inster EV is available with two NMC battery packs – a 97bhp, 42kWh and 115bhp, 49kWh – delivering a claimed WLTP range of 300km and 355km, respectively. The India-spec model is likely to be offered with the same set of batteries.

Similar to other Hyundai cars, the Hyundai Inster EV comes packed with several premium features including an ADAS suite, a 360-degree camera with blind spot monitoring, auto climate control, dual 10.25-inch displays for touchscreen infotainment and instrument cluster, among others.
