Tata Sierra Turbo-Petrol, Diesel & EV Variants – What to Expect?

Must Read

Tata Sierra is just a few months away from its market launch. We have already seen the production-ready model on multiple occasions, revealing significant details about its design and interior. Recently, the midsize SUV was caught on camera at a fuel station and the test mule seen there was the petrol-powered version.

While the official engine specifications are yet to be revealed, the Sierra is expected to be offered with two all-new petrol engines – a 1.5L naturally aspirated and a 1.5L turbocharged. However, the turbo-petrol engine will be introduced at a later stage.

Turbo-Petrol

The 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine is likely to be reserved for the higher trims. This four-cylinder motor pushes out a peak power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. Both petrol engines will be capable of running on the E20 fuel mix.

Diesel Engine

The Sierra will also come with a diesel engine option, and Tata might use the 2.0L turbo motor that already powers the Harrier and Safari. This engine produces a maximum power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. The SUV lineup is expected to come with both manual and automatic gearbox options. The higher trims could be exclusively offered with the AWD (all-wheel drive) system.

Electric Sierra

Interestingly, the Tata Sierra EV will debut before its ICE (internal combustion engine) version. The electric iteration is expected to borrow the 65kWh and 75kWh battery packs from the Harrier EV. Similar to its sibling, the Sierra might feature RWD (rear-wheel drive) and QWD (quad-wheel drive) systems. The SUV will offer four terrain modes – Mud Ruts, Rock Crawl, Sand and Snow.

Strong Competition

With its multi-powertrain strategy, the Tata Sierra will compete directly with the segment leader – the Hyundai Creta. It will also face strong competition from the Kia Seltos, the newly-launched Maruti Victoris, Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, Toyota Hyryder, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and Mahindra BE6.
