Petrol Still Rules – CNG Outsell Diesel, EVs Slightly Ahead Hybrids

Must Read

The Indian passenger vehicle market witnessed a significant transformation in FY2025, where conventional fuel dominance was challenged by alternative fuels. Petrol still rules the sales charts with a major share, while CNG outsold diesel for the first time ever. Interestingly, the gap between electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids has also narrowed. These trends clearly indicate changing buyer preferences and the increasing acceptance of alternative mobility solutions.

Here’re the key observations from the fuel-mix report of the financial year 2025.

FY2025 Fuel-Mix Report

Petrol Diesel CNG Hybrid EV

Maruti Suzuki With the most extensive CNG range, Maruti Suzuki commands 70.5 percent of India’s total CNG car sales. Fleet buyers prefer CNG vehicles for their high fuel efficiency and low cost of ownership, while private buyers are also gradually shifting to CNG. In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki sold total of 11,48,363 petrol models, 5,91,730 units CNG cars and 20,672 hybrids.

Hyundai Motor India The company continues to offer petrol and diesel options across its model lineup along with CNG in select models. In FY2025, Hyundai managed to sell 4,08,242 petrol, 1,07,187 diesel, 79,267 CNG cars and 3,970 units of EVs. Amid increasing competition, Hyundai plans to introduce new mass-market electric and hybrid cars in the coming years.

Tata Motors Despite having offerings across petrol, diesel, CNG and EV segments, the homegrown automaker lost ground in FY205 across all segments.

Mahindra & Mahindra The homegrown automaker is riding high on success, and outperformed Hyundai and Tata in several months. In FY2025, the automaker held a 55 percent market share in diesel and over 11 percent in EVs.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor The Japanese automaker continues to lead the hybrid segment with over 79 percent market share in FY2025. The company currently offers the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova Hycross with strong hybrid powertrains.

Kia India After Mahindra & Mahindra, Kia Motor India is the second top car manufacturer in the diesel car segment.

JSW MG Motor India The automaker majorly reliant on its electric offerings including the Windsor EV and Comet EV. In FY2025, MG outperformed Tata Motors, which previously dominated the EV segment with models like Nexon EV and Punch EV.
