Competition in the midsize SUV segment is set to intensify with the launch of the all-new Maruti Victrois – the new flagship SUV for the Maruti Suzuki Arena dealership network. It will directly take on the Hyundai Creta, which has long been an undisrupted player in the segment. Let’s compare these two SUVs in terms of their safety, technology and mileage.

The new Victoris is the safest Maruti Suzuki yet. The midsize SUV achieved a 5-start safety rating at the BNCAP (Bharat New Car Assessment Program), with 31.66 out of 32 points for the adult occupant protection and 43 out of 49 points for the child occupant protection.

The standard safety kit of the new Maruti SUV includes 6 airbags, ABS with brake assist, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, traction control system, hill hold assist, all three-point seatbelts and Isofix child seat anchors. It’s also the first Maruti Suzuki to offer Level 2 ADAS suite (reserved for higher trims), which packs features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and more.

The Hyundai Creta was subjected to the Global NCAP in 2022, and received a 3 stars safety rating for the adult and child occupant protection. It is yet to be tested under BNCAP. Safety features such as 6 airbags, hill start assist, ABS with EBD and ESC, tyre pressure monitoring system, Isofix anchors, central locking and five three-point seatbelts are available right from the base variant. The ADAS suite is available from the SX Tech, while a 360-degree camera and blind spot monitor are offered from the SX (O) trim onwards.

The new Victoris shares its powertrain with the Grand Vitara, but delivers more fuel efficiency. The SUV comes with the 103bhp, 1.5L mild hybrid petrol, 116bhp, 1.5L strong hybrid and 89bhp petrol-CNG engine options. The mild petrol version delivers a claimed mileage of 21.18kmpl (MT) and 21.06kmpl (AT), while the strong hybrid model offers 28.65kmpl – the most fuel-efficient engine. The CNG version promises a fuel economy of 27.02km/kg.

The Hyundai Creta is available with three engine options – a 115bhp, 1.5L petrol, a 160bhp 1.5L turbo petrol and a 116bhp, 1.5L diesel. The turbo-petrol DCT offers a claimed ARAI mileage of 18.4kmpl, while the diesel manual and automatic versions offer 21.8kmpl and 19.1kmpl, respectively. The NA petrol returns a fuel efficiency of 17.4kmpl with manual and 17.7kmpl with iVT gearbox.

Unlike the Victoris, the Hyundai Creta does not offer strong hybrid or CNG powertrains.
