Aiming to strengthen its market, Maruti Suzuki plans to adapt a multi-powertrain strategy, offering BEVs (battery electric vehicles), strong hybrids, CNG and flex-fuel models in the coming years. The carmaker has a major focus on strong hybrid vehicles and in developing its in-house series hybrid powertrain for its mass-market offerings. Meanwhile, the upcoming premium Maruti models will feature Toyota-sourced Atkinson cycle hybrid powertrain.
Maruti Suzuki will introduce at least four strong hybrid cars by the end of 2026. While official launch timeline and product details are yet to be announced, the upcoming range will include the Fronx hybrid, new-gen Baleno, a premium SUV and a sub-4 metre MPV.
Maruti Fronx Hybrid
The Maruti Fronx hybrid, which was recently caught testing, will be the first model to feature the brand’s own strong hybrid powertrain. It’s likely to hit showrooms in the first half of 2026. Spy images reveal that the compact crossover will also receive an ADAS (autonomous driver assistance system) suite.

Baleno & Mini MPV
The Fronx hybrid will soon be followed by the next-generation Baleno hatchback and a mini MPV based on the Japan-spec Suzuki Spacia. Both these models will feature Maruti Suzuki’s new hybrid powertrain.
Hybrid Powertrain
Maruti Suzuki is likely to hybridize its 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine that powers the Swift hatchback. If reports are to be believed, this hybrid technology will be significantly cost-effective than Toyota’s Atkison cycle system. It will be a series hybrid system, delivering a fuel efficiency of over 35kmpl.
A Premium SUV
The Indo-Japanese automaker is also working on a premium SUV, which will measure over 4.5 metres in length and feature three-row seat configuration. It’s expected to share platform and powertrains with the Grand Vitara and take on the SUVs like Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector Plus.
