Maruti Suzuki to Build Drones, Electric Flying Taxis & More?

India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to expand its business domain beyond traditional vehicle manufacturing through a newly signed MoU (Memorandum of Association). MSIL recently received broad approval for a proposal to manufacture drones, unmannered aerial vehicles (UAVs), electric air taxis and advanced control and propulsion systems.

The board approved these new business plans during a meeting held on 31st July, 2025. Now, these changes will now be presented to the company’s shareholders for final approval at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 28, 2025.

Open Doors to New Mobility Services

This new business strategy will also enable Maruti Suzuki to explore new mobility services like EV charging, car leasing and used car sales. The company also aims to explore future technologies and new industries beyond just manufacturing petrol and diesel vehicles. Maruti Suzuki is further planning to provide R&D logistics, consulting, supply chain services and facilities for vehicle testing and certification.

Maruti’s Electric Flying Car Ambitions

Maruti’s parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation and the Japanese SkyDrive had signed a manufacturing cooperation contract for manufacturing the Skydrive (SD-05 type) in June 2023. SkyDrive is a renowned for its safer, more affordable, quieter, and emission free aerial mobility solutions.

SkyDrive (SD-05 type) is a next-generation eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, which is also known as Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) or Urban Air Mobility (UAM). Designed for the short intra-city routes, the SD-05 offers a range of 15km with a top speed of 100kmph. Future upgrades may extended its range to up to 40km.

SD-05 eVTOL Aircraft’s India Debut

SkyDrive’s SD-05 eVTOL aircraft made its India debut at the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS), which was held from January 10th to 12th, 2024. A 1/5 scale model of the aircraft was showcased at the summit, showring SkyDrive’s interest in the Indian market. It also hints at India launch of the air taxis and urban air mobility solutions in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki.
