August 2025 was a transitional month for the Indian automotive industry as market sentiment was cautious due to the upcoming GST reforms and the festive season. Furthermore, heavy rains and monsoon disruptions slowed down retail sales and reduced footfalls at dealerships.
A total of 3,27,719 units of passenger vehicles were sold in August 2025 as compared to 3,54,273 units in August 2024, registering a decline of 7.5%. Most OEMs recorded a YoY (year-on-year) sales decline, while Toyota, MG and Skoda were the only companies to post growth of 2.5%, 43.9% and 79.3%, respectively.
- Talking about the SUVs, the Hyundai Creta continued to dominate the sales chart with sales of 15,924 units against 16,762 units in the same last year, accounting for a 5% decline. The Tata Nexon climbed up to secure the second spot with total sales of 14,004 units, surpassing the Brezza.

- With sales of 13,6220 units, the Maruti Brezza was the third best-selling SUV in August 2025. The subcompact SUV, however, witnessed a significant YoY decline of 29%.
- The Maruti Fronx retained the fourth position, registering sales of 12,422 units. Its arch rival, the Tata Punch clocked sales of 10,704 units against 15,643 units in the corresponding month previous year.
- The Mahindra Scorpio slipped to sixth position from third, registering sales of 9,840 units as opposed to 13,787 units in August 2024.
- Toyota Kirloskar Motor managed to sell 9,100 units of the Hyryder SUV in August 2025 against 6,534 units in the same month last year. The SUV recorded a massive sales growth of 39%.
- The Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet subcompact SUV stood at eighth and ninth spots with sales of 8,109 units and 7,741 units, respectively.
- Meanwhile, the Mahindra Thar registered a YoY growth of 64% with total sales of 6,997 units. However, its MoM (month-on-month) sales declined sharply, with the SUV slipped to tenth position from seventh in July 2025.
