Hybrid Power & Ethanol-Flex Plan

Must Read

Mahindra & Mahindra is getting future-ready with its new product lineup, advanced technologies, next-gen architecture and multiple powertrain strategy. The homegrown automaker already has a strong hold in the ICE-powered SUV segment, and now it plans to tap the growing EV (electric vehicle), hybrid and flex-fuel categories. The newly-launched Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e have been generating volumes for the carmaker since their market debut, and several new EVs are already in the pipeline.

Mahindra’s Hybrid Plan

Aiming to expand its portfolio, Mahindra is exploring strong hybrid technology and range extenders for its future SUVs. If reports are to believed, the Mahindra XUV 3XO will be the brand’s first hybrid vehicle in India, set to arrive in 2026. Codenamed S226, the compact hybrid SUV is likely to feature a 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, paired with an electric motor and a battery pack.

The hybrid model is expected to receive ‘Hybrid’ badge on the exterior and software updates (such as instrument cluster graphics), while the overall design, dimensions, cabin and features of the Mahindra XUV 3XO hybrid will be identical to its ICE counterpart. Mahindra is also considering range extender hybrids for its INGLO platform-based electric SUVs – codenamed M130 and M330.

Mahindra’s Flex-Fuel Plan

The homegrown SUV marker is also working on flex-fuel engines capable of running higher blends of ethanol (up to E85). This plan comes in light when the Indian government announced its plan to move to introduce E30 ethanol blend fuel nationwide.

Mahindra’s all-new NU_IQ modular platform, unveiled on 2025 Independence Day, supports multiple body styles and powertrains including electric, hybrid and flex-fuel. The next-gen Mahindra SUVs based on the NU_IQ architecture are expected to be offered with the flex-fuel powertrain options.

Flex-fuel vehicles require ethanol content sensors to work efficiently. These sensors monitor the real-time proportion of ethanol and petrol in the fuel mix. Since ethanol can make cold starting difficult in lower temperatures, fuel rail and injector heaters are installed to ensure reliable ignition.
