Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced its 10-year powertrain roadmap that includes internal combustion engines (ICEs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrids and alternative fuels. This multi-powertrain strategy aligns with the company’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in Japan and Europe, and by 2070 in India.

Flex-Fuel Plans for India

The Japanese automaker has confirmed its plan to introduce FFVs (flex fuel vehicles), capable of supporting up to 85% bioethanol, within this fiscal year (i.e. by March 2026). Maruti Suzuki India started offering E20 bioethanol-compatible engines in April, 2025.

First Mass-Market Flex-Fuel Car

The Maruti Wagon R flex fuel prototype was first showcased in December 2022, followed by appearances at the 2023 Auto Expo and 2024 Bharat Mobility Global Expo. It’s likely to become India’s first mass-market flex-fuel car, capable running on ethanol-petrol blend between 20 percent (E20) and 85 percent (E95) fuel. The model has been developed by Maruti Suzuki’s engineers with inputs from Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan.

Fuel System Updates

The Maruti Wagon R flex fuel prototype features new fuel system technologies such as ethanol sensor for detecting ethanol percentage and a heated fuel rail for cold start assist. Its engine management system, fuel injector, fuel pump and other mechanical components have been upgraded for improved efficiency. This flex fuel engine also complies with the stricter BS6 Phase II emission standards.

Hybrid Strategy in India

The Indo-Japanese automaker will implement its multiple powertrain strategy in India with the introduction of the e Vitara electric SUV and Fronx hybrid compact crossover in 2026. The Maruti Fronx will be brand’s first hybrid offering, which will also mark debut of the brand’s in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain.

As per media reports, Maruti Suzuki’s new strong hybrid system will be significantly more cost effective and efficient than Toyota’s Atkinson hybrid powertrain. The carmaker plans to introduce the new hybrid powertrain to its mass-market offerings including new-gen Baleno, an affordable mini MPV, next-gen Swift and Brezza.
