The majestic Beating Retreat ceremony, a centuries-old military tradition, came alive at the historic Vijay Chowk on Monday evening with spectacular precision, vibrant Indian tunes, and a breathtaking drone show that lit up the night sky, leaving the audience in awe.
The ceremony, which officially marks the culmination of Republic Day celebrations, was attended by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other dignitaries. Thousands of spectators thronged the venue, while millions tuned in across the country to witness the grand spectacle that embodies national pride and military excellence.
The event commenced with massed bands of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Central Armed Police Forces performing martial tunes like “Shankhnaad,” “Veer Sainik,” and the ever-popular “Sare Jahan Se Achha.” The synchronised rhythms of the pipes and drums, combined with the visual precision of the ceremonial drill, stirred patriotic emotions among the crowd.
However, the highlight of the evening was the dazzling drone show featuring over 1,000 indigenously developed drones, orchestrated by a startup under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The drones animated the sky with synchronised patterns, forming iconic symbols such as the Ashoka Chakra, India Gate, and the Tricolour, all set to the rhythm of live music. This cutting-edge addition to the ceremony showcased India’s growing technological prowess and its integration with tradition.
The ceremony concluded with the soulful tune of “Abide With Me,” followed by the national anthem as the Rashtrapati Bhavan was bathed in golden lights, adding a surreal glow to the evening.
Rooted in British military customs but adapted uniquely by India, the Beating Retreat ceremony has evolved over the years into a cultural spectacle. It not only reflects the discipline and tradition of the armed forces but also the spirit of a self-reliant, proud nation.
