SUVs continue to sell like hot cakes in the Indian market. Considering the growing demand, OEMs have planned multiple new models in this segment including the mainstream players such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra. In 2026, these four car manufactures will introduce new subcompact SUVs targeting first time urban buyers and customers upgrading from entry-level vehicle to SUVs. Maruti Fronx Hybrid
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce its first mass-market hybrid car in 2026. According to reports, the Indo-Japanese automaker is developing an in-house strong hybrid powertrain for its small and midsize offerings. The Maruti Fronx will be the first model to feature Maruti Suzuki’s own hybrid technology, which is said to be significantly cost effective than Toyota’s strong hybrid powertrain.
Hyundai Bayon
Hyundai Motor India has planned four product launches for 2026 including 2 facelifts (Exter and Verna) and two compact SUVs – Bayon and Inster EV. To be positioned against the Maruti Fronx, the Hyundai Bayon will mark debut of the brand’s all-new 1.2L TGDi petrol engine, developed locally. Interestingly, this new powertrain supports hybrid technology and its hybrid version will power Hyundai’s future compact models.
Tata Scarlet
As per media report, Tata Motors is working on a new subcompact SUV – codenamed Tata Scarlet. It could be based on a monocoque chassis and share design elements with the upcoming Sierra SUV. As far as engines are concerned, the Tata Scarlet is expected to be offered with a 120bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol and 125bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol engines. Tata’s all-new 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine, which will debut on the Sierra, might also make its way to Scarlet.
Mahindra XUV 3XO Hybrid/EV
Mahindra & Mahindra will foray into the growing hybrid SUV segment with the XUV 3XO in 2026. It’s likely to use the proven 1.2L turbo petrol engine, paired with a hybrid system. The Mahindra XUV 3XO will also receive an electric version, which is likely to feature a smaller 35kWh battery pack, paired with an electric motor. A few EV and hybrid specific changes will be made to its exterior and interior.
