In the first half of 2025, hybrid vehicles have surpassed electric vehicles with sales of over 52,000 units, registering a growth of 62.5 percent. Toyota Kirloskar Motors is leading the segment with an 81 percent shares in strong hybrid sales with products like the Innova Hycross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Aiming to challenge Toyota’s dominance, Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra are planning to introduce affordable compact hybrid SUVs in 2026. Let’s take a look at the key details of the upcoming models.
Maruti Fronx Hybrid
According to media reports, Maruti Suzuki is developing an in-house series hybrid powertrain for its mass-market offerings. The Fronx compact crossover will mark debut of the brand’s new strong hybrid technology, followed by the new-gen Baleno and a sub-4 metre MPV in 2026. The carmaker is likely to electrify its new Z12E, 3-cylinder petrol engine. This motor will work as a generator and supply power to a battery pack, expected to range between 1.5kWh – 2kWh. An electric motor will drive power to the front wheels.
The overall design and interior of the Maruti Fronx hybrid will be identical to its ICE counterpart. However, it might get ‘hybrid’ badging on the exterior and a few changes inside the cabin. The strong hybrid powertrain will be exclusively offered on the higher trims, and is expected to be priced nearly Rs 2 lakh – Rs 2.5 lakh premium over the petrol-powered Fronx.
Mahindra XUV 3XO Hybrid
The homegrown automaker is exploring hybrid technologies including strong hybrids and range extenders to expand its product portfolio. The Mahindra XUV 3XO compact SUV could be brand’s first hybrid model, expected to arrive in 2026.
If media reports are to be believed, Mahindra might use its 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to pair it with the hybrid technology. The ICE-powered Mahindra SUV will feature the series-hybrid powertrain, while the BEVs (battery electric vehicles) are likely to be offered with a range-extender configuration.
